Our Process

At Dr Door, we believe in a meticulous and detail-oriented approach to door refinishing. Here's an in-depth look at our process:

*Wood Exterior Entry Doors:*

1. We begin by removing the hardware from the door and the door from the jamb. We then carefully move it to a set of padded saw horses, usually in a garage or some covered area on site.

2. We apply a chemical stripper to the door and remove the original sealant and stain with a variety of abrasives.

3. Once we are satisfied with the preparation, we begin the sanding procedure, which is primarily done by hand to ensure the best results. The different stages of sanding depend on the color the customer has chosen and the wood grain pattern of the door.

4. After sanding, we apply the stain with a foam brush and remove the excess with a stain pad, leaving no brush strokes and producing an even coat of stain.

5. We allow the stain to dry for a half hour as recommended by the product manufacturer. Once dry, we apply a deep penetrating top coat with a foam brush, providing maximum protection from the elements.

6. Finally, we rehang the door, reattach the hardware, and voila! The end result is a healthy, beautiful door that will withstand the test of time.

*Fiberglass Exterior Doors:*

The process for fiberglass doors is similar to wood doors, minus the need for a 3 or 4 grade sanding process due to the unique nature of fiberglass.

*Wood Garage Doors:*

For garage doors, we lightly clean the surface to remove dust and debris but allow the original pigment to stay mostly intact. We then apply a pigmented sealant, which is semi-transparent, to achieve the best possible results.
